WHAT IS A VILLAGE?

On 12/30/2019, the San Francisco Chronicle ran a front-page article “San Franciscans are getting older fast. NEXT Village helps them do it with dignity.”

NEXT Village helps make sure seniors in the northeast corner of the city — home to San Francisco’s highest concentration of elderly residents — can remain in their homes as long as possible. Providing social networks and practical support, it is typical of the Village model replicated across the US, and followed by GNV.

WHAT IS GREATER NILES VILLAGE?

Greater Niles Village (GNV) is a non-profit, member-driven organization led by a Board of Directors. Like SF NEXT, we are a community of neighbors who share our skills and support to navigate the challenges and opportunities of aging. A better experience of aging is possible when we can rely on each other.

Anyone can participate by
  • signing up for GNV's monthly Newsletter at GreaterNilesVillage.org
  • joining one of GNV’s  special interest groups, such as the Walking Group or the Book Club
  • volunteering (and with 10 hours’ service  a month, sign up as social members)
Village members are GNV's foundation. Villagers organize all of GNV’s activities—there are no paid staff members. Dues pay for required operational expenses.

Social memberships (paid annually, $20 per month per household) make all of GNV's activities possible. Full Service memberships (paid annually, $30 per month for individuals or $40 per month for couples/households) add individualized direct services (in relationship to the number of volunteer service providers) for members living in the neighborhood along Mission Blvd. from Union City to Morrison Canyon.

Judy's Fund is GNV's scholarship fund, which enables any resident in the neighborhood to become a GNV member without cost being a barrier.

CENSUS

Census 2020The stakes are high. In 2016, more than 300 federally funded programs relied on census data to distribute more than $675 billion to states and localities, including aid such as Medicare Part B.

“Participating in the census means getting counted to determine how much federal funding comes into your community and how congressional representation is determined,” says AARP National Volunteer President Catherine Alicia Georges. Georges says it is important for older Americans who don’t want to take the census digitally to know they won’t be forced to. “No one has to take the census online,” she says.

Between March 12 and 20, most households will receive a postcard invitation to respond online to the 2020 census. Those who don’t answer will then receive the traditional paper form in the mail. If a household still does not respond, the bureau will send a census taker to knock on that door to collect the household’s data.

If you need any assistance in responding to the 2020 Census
please contact GNV at info@GreaterNilesVillage.org or 510-936-0214

HELPING HANDS TEAM
