Book Club
March 5, 2021
1:00 - 2:30 pm
Racism is the riveting topic of our times. In the Warmth of Other Suns Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson chronicles a history of strength and resilience as she tells the story of America’s Great Migration of Blacks from the Jim Crow South between WWI and the 1970’s. Patty Allen will lead a discussion of this compelling read that draws on the terrifying and heartwarming stories of three Black families who made the journey.

In and of ItselfThe Culture Club
March 17, 2021
2:00 - 3:30 pm
If you are interested in visual and performing arts—theatre, opera, music, dance, art—welcome to The Culture Club. Join us for a discussion of In and Of Itself. A solo show by Derek DelGaudio, this powerful theatrical experience explores identity—how we see others, how we see ourselves and how others see us. The project chronicles conceptual storyteller DelGaudio’s attempt to understand the illusory nature of identity. His journey expands to a collective experience that forces us to confront the boundaries of our own identities. We will watch the show separately on Hulu (access by Hulu subscription or by free app available to Amazon Prime members), then gather over Zoom to share our thoughts on this astonishing show.

GNV ADDRESSING COVID

Alameda County Board of SupsEmergency Grants
The office of Richard Valle, Alameda County Supervisor for District 2, recently announced Emergency Support Grants for Community Based Organizations. GNV applied for, and was granted, special funds to help seniors experiencing a financial crisis connected to the COVID pandemic. The funds can be used to purchase goods or services (such as rent, utilities, food, supplies, medication) to address a need that, if unmet, will negatively affect the individual's health or well-being.

Funds are available now, first come, first served. Seniors may request assistance on behalf of someone you know or for yourself. When contacting GNV, be prepared with name, address, and phone of the suggested recipient, a short description of the amount needed and how it will be used. Include your contact information if you're requesting for someone else.

Masks and Face Shields
The City of Fremont’s Human Services Department received a very large donation of 1000 surgical face masks and 50 face shields. Greater Niles Village is helping with distribution. They are available free of charge.
