CENSUS 2020 

Census 2020 FremontCensus 2020 is coming! Starting March 12, 2020 you can respond online, by phone, or by mail to the 2020 Census. Census data is used to make sure government resources are allocated fairly and that everyone is represented equally in our political system. When you respond, you ensure funding for schools, roads, healthcare, social services, and housing in your community.
 
Did you know:
  • every person not counted = $10,000 lost in our community
  • an undercount of 6% = loss of $1 billion over 10 years
Census data is completely confidential. The Census will NOT ask for citizenship or immigration status, a social security number, or any financial information.

CONNECTING WITH GREATER NILES VILLAGE (GNV)

Tales of the Town, February 21

“Niles-centric History of Alameda Creek”

Nestled in the historic Niles Depot, 27 Villagers heard Julie Cain, Niles historian and Stanford affiliate, discuss Niles History. Julie Cain kept all spellbound with her well-researched presentation about Alameda Creek. The talk featured lots of pictures of early official maps, copies of the census, hand drawn maps, photos and lithographs.
 
Noting that we only know our history when we know everyone’s history, Julie recounted tales of those who lived along Alameda Creek, from native peoples 14,000 years ago through waves of immigrants to the diverse population of the present day. Serious faces and rapt attention filled the room, testament to how interesting Julie makes our history.

The Niles Depot Museum is chock-full of interesting exhibits and memorabilia from the hey-day of the two railroads that called Niles home.

Book Club

When I heard that GNV was sponsoring a book club, I lunged at the chance to join even though I already belonged to several other such groups.  We have read a fairly wide array of books thus far, including A Fine Balance (Mistry), A Gentleman in Moscow (Towles), Evicted (Desmond), and The Scarlet Letter (Hawthorne); and I have greatly enjoyed getting to know other Nilesians as well as hearing other people's perspectives on the works.  Moreover, meeting at the historic Niles Library is an extra bonus...and we're even allowed to laugh boisterously, which we quite often do! (From Patty Allen)

Take Charge of your Tech

I was convinced I had to buy a new iPhone until I consulted with the Tech Geezers. I was having trouble taking photos because my iPhone’s memory storage was full. Sammy helped me check my iPhone storage. He noticed that three of the applications on my phone (including Google maps) were using a lot of storage for data. Did I need those data files?  I decided I didn’t, and using Sammy’s suggested remedy, I completely deleted the applications and then re-installed them. It worked!  I’m back to taking photos; I still have all my favorite apps; and I don’t have to buy a new phone. Take Charge of Your Tech is terrific! (From Iris Nicholson)
