The GNV Book Club
Villager Marge Leonard will lead the discussion of
Tom Lake by Ann Patchett.
The writer calls this her "pandemic novel”. In fact it is set in 2020 during the first part of the lockdown as Lara, the protagonist and a one-time summer-stock theater actress, harvests the family's cherry crop in northern Michigan, with her three grown daughters assisting her. In part to pass the time as they work, she shares stories about the time she played the role of Emily in Thornton Wilder's
Our Town, and became involved with an actor, Duke, who later makes it big. The SF Chronicle proclaims the book as "one to be savored” and “once-in-a-blue-moon type" while NPR hails Patchett as a "chronicler of people thrown together in patched families who now turns her attention to love--youthful, marital, fleeting, enduring”.
Remember that Banter Books in downtown Fremont offers a 15% discount on the purchase of the book, but you must mention to the clerk that you are a member of the GNV Book Club. Happy reading!
Villager Marge Leonard will host the discussion at her home, 487 School Street.
