We will be discussing The Bastard Brigade by Sam Kean. This is a non-fiction book about a top-secret Allied team of scientists, spies, and soldiers tasked with sabotaging Nazi Germany's atomic bomb program during World War II. The group, officially known as the Alsos Mission, was called the "Bastard Brigade" because it operated independently outside of the normal military command. Its mission involved espionage, stealing resources like uranium and heavy water, sabotaging facilities, and attempting to capture or assassinate key German nuclear physicists like Werner Heisenberg. The book highlights the lesser-known history behind the development of the atomic bomb and features a cast of unique characters, including baseball player Moe Berg and Joe Kennedy, Jr.
