"The Buddha in the Attic"
The GNV Book Group will discuss Julie Otsuka's
The Buddha in the Attic
. This gripping work of historical fiction is set during the early part of the twentieth century through the time of the internment in the 1940s. With no plot in the usual sense, the novel explores the challenging lives of mail-order brides from Japan, who immigrated to the US and married men they had not met. It is told in the first person plural from the point of view of many girls and women, none of whom is individualized as a continuing character, but all of whom are vividly described in a sentence or two.
