Something To Live For
The next GNV book discussion selection is a departure of sorts from the heavier fare we have been reading lately. Richard Roper's debut novel,
Something To Live For
, has been variously described as "heart-breaking, darkly funny, and life-affirming”. The protagonist, Andrew, lives in a London suburb, and has a rather unenviable job: being the official government contact person for those who have died alone and left no known kin. What could be a depressing, boring tale instead revolves around goofy office antics, a thicket of lies, seemingly thwarted romance...you name it. While not a contender for a Booker Prize, this novel will make you smile, repeatedly, and illuminate some of the darker corners of the human condition.
We will meet outside on the shaded patio at the home of Patty Allen (masks optional), who will lead the discussion.
