The next GNV book discussion selection is a departure of sorts from the heavier fare we have been reading lately. Richard Roper's debut novel, Something To Live For, has been variously described as "heart-breaking, darkly funny, and life-affirming”. The protagonist, Andrew, lives in a London suburb, and has a rather unenviable job: being the official government contact person for those who have died alone and left no known kin. What could be a depressing, boring tale instead revolves around goofy office antics, a thicket of lies, seemingly thwarted romance...you name it. While not a contender for a Booker Prize, this novel will make you smile, repeatedly, and illuminate some of the darker corners of the human condition.
