About this event
The GNV Book Club
Villager Beth Rasler will lead a discussion of Carl Hiaasen’s Bad Monkey, a darkly humorous crime thriller. At the start of the book a visitor fishing near Key West hooks a severed human arm with its middle finger extended in an all-too familiar gesture. Andrew Yancy, a defrocked cop forced to turn restaurant inspector, winds up embroiled in the severed-arm investigation after his ex-boss, the sheriff, enlists him to transport the limb from the Keys to Miami-Dade County. What ensues is screwball chaos involving a beautiful coroner, evil real estate developers and other wealthy crooks, a Bahamian scooter-riding VooDoo witch, and a mangy capuchin monkey named Driggs.
Hiaasen grew up in Florida, and worked at the Miami Herald for over four decades. Sometimes his stories are partly based on real Miami news items. The book looks to be an interesting trip to his world.
